The founding principle of the De’VIA Curriculum is that Deaf and Deaf-blind children are entitled to learn about their Deaf heritage, language, struggles and victories, identity, and rights through visual arts.

American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut, is the birthplace of American Sign Language and has a cultural museum full of archival materials such as books, pamphlets, and letters.
